For over 65 years, Veldkamp’s Flowers has been delivering hand-designed fresh quality floral arrangements, gifts, and home décor to homes throughout the Denver metro area.
The company was started in 1959 by Ben Veldkamp Jr., who left his home country of Holland for America. With a family history of horticulture, he opened a retail store flower shop in Lakewood, Colorado and started what would become a family legacy. This family-owned business has established a tradition of exceptional customer care and satisfaction through three generations while navigating a changing and evolving industry.
We asked John Veldkamp, President/CEO, how Veldkamp’s Flowers has been able to remain so successful in the Denver area over the years. He explained, “We’ve been able to adapt with the times and our customers. We’re constantly changing with trends, quality, and value to keep up with what they need.” The company has evolved over the years, always changing and growing.
In the 1970s, Veldkamp’s had retail stores in a number of locations throughout Colorado, including inside Target stores and Albertson’s supermarket chain. In addition to the retail locations, they purchased a greenhouse production facility and began selling products at a wholesale level. But, by the end of the 70s, Target and Albertson’s took their floral departments in-house, so Veldkamp’s locations were eliminated. In 2003, the growing operation was sold.
As Veldkamp’s Flower grew, it expanded into landscaping, garden centers, and other floral services. Some services were discontinued, others were sold to outside entities. John emphasizes, “As times changed, we shifted to one centralized location for our operations. As people shifted to the online marketplace, we adapted and created a website and offered online ordering. We now utilize our 80,000 square foot facility and customized website to serve the entire metro area from one location.” Veldkamp’s continues to adapt to changing industry, but always keeps their clients at the center of their work, ensuring their satisfaction is paramount.
Veldkamp’s has grown just as Denver has. John appreciates the company for being a part of so many clients’ life experiences and memories. “We get to grow with the communities we serve.
